Depression is a massive public health issue. Thankfully, there are teams of scientists dedicated to researching mental health, suicide, and substance use disorders. On this podcast, we decode the science of mood disorders through discussions with a leading expert in the field, Dr. Madhukar Trivedi. We’re here to change the way we think and talk about depression, in an accessible, approachable way. Created by The Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care in Dallas, TX. What really IS depression? What does depression research entail? How does research work, who benefits from it, why is participation so important, and how can we progress it even further? If you’ve ever wondered how research studies are conducted, this episode is for you! Episode 5 features special guests Dr. Manish Jha, Dr. Geoffrey Obel, and Dr. DeWanda Harris Trimiar in discussion about research study protocols, diversity in participation, safety and privacy, and community research design.
Dr. Manish Jha serves as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the CDRC, and has the endowed title of the O’Donnell Brain Institute Clinical Neuroscience Scholar. In addition to his research and educational activities, Dr. Jha maintains an active clinical practice focusing on evidence-based interventions for difficulty-to-treat depressive and anxiety disorders.
Dr. Geoffrey Obel has been advancing research and knowledge in public health for over 10 years, working with organizations to develop policies, procedures and programs that facilitate improved public health outcomes. Now, he serves as a National Project Director for the Innovative Development Research Engagement Manual (I-DREM) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, working to increase recruitment and retention of diverse populations in Randomized Clinical Trials and Non-Experimental Studies.

S1, Episode 10: A Path for Psychedelic Research
Wednesday Dec 01, 2021
Wednesday Dec 01, 2021
Catherine Huff interviews Dr. Manish Jha and Dr. Madhukar Trivedi. There has been a renewed interest in researching psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. But there is still much work to be done to understand this as a potential treatment. What is the mechanism by which psychedelics may work for depression? What are the risks associated with this kind of treatment? What has the research shown? What work needs to be done to have clear evidence of benefit and safety profiles? Dr. Jha has substantial expertise in the conduct of clinical trials and extensive clinical experience in providing care to patients with treatment-refractory psychiatric illnesses. His research uses functional neuroimaging and affective neuroscience experiments to elucidate the neurocircuit mechanisms in order to develop the next generation of circuit-specific treatments for psychiatric disorders. Dr. Jha was involved with studies investigating ketamine for people with major depressive disorder. Contact us at DecodingDepressionPodcast@UTSouthwestern.edu www.centerfordepression.org/

Wednesday Oct 20, 2021
Wednesday Oct 20, 2021
Kathryn Forbes interviews Sara Levinson, MPH, MSLOC and Dr. Madhukar Trivedi about the importance of self-monitoring and the work to reduce the burdens associated with mental health screening by putting the power in the hands of individuals. Active self-monitoring helps you quickly notice changes in your mental health, so that you can quickly take action. CDRC researchers designed the Evexia self-monitoring website to empower individuals to screen themselves regularly and track changes in their mental wellness over time. As Senior Project Manager and Head of the CDRC’s Mood Disorders Network (MDN), Sara Levinson works to implement the findings from CDRC research into real world settings.
